Written by Freda Falconer
Actress Freda Falconer’s BBC Radio 4 Saturday Night Theatre play “I Shan’t Be Home to Dinner” is one of the remarkably few successful war plays written by a woman.
Based on the author’s true story of her life on an R.A.F airbase in WW2 with her husband, a member of R.A.F Bomber Command, Flight Lieutenant Keith James Falconer DFC.
The original radio recording has been lost but Freda’s granddaughter, actress and writer Elizabeth Blake, has adapted the original script and takes on the role her grandmother played. Giles Shenton (Old Herbaceous/Three Men in a Boat) provides the humour in this poignant play that celebrates the buoyant spirit and selfless heroism of the R.A.F crews and the bittersweet emotions of the women who waited for them to come home.
The production is performed as a radio play and is directed by Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre Director, Rob Allerston.
“Human, humorous and moving.” The Stage.
